EL Matters - 15 Aug

Dear 5F,

We have filed your EL Stellar Worksheet file today. And you have brought it home for revision and parent's signature. All that is left to file in are: Unit 8 Spelling worksheet (after exam), Unit 9 LS (tmr), Unit 9 CB (tmr), Unit 9 LRD on SW notes (after exam), CA2 Practice Booklets A and B and CA2 Exam Paper.

Dear parents, please look through your child's worksheets and help your child with his/her weak areas. Do encourage them to revise certain topics before doing more practice. E.g. reported speech, passive and active voice, synthesis and transformation, tenses, subject-verb agreement.
As they revise their worksheets, they should also take note of the difficult words inside and how to use them.

We will have to complete the 3 remaining topics inside your Unit 9 CB as well as Unit 8 Spelling after the exam.

Homework:
- Complete CA2 Practice Paper Booklet A (By tmr)
You may refer to the dictionary or notes as you do your work. Please do it properly as part of your CA2 revision.

You will complete Practice Paper Booklet B under timed exam conditions tomorrow in class.
You must be able to finish the paper as well as check through your work once within the 1 hour given. Please come prepared to do your best.

See you!

Dear 5F,

We have come to the end of Term 2.

I have not given any homework so that you can enjoy your holiday.

But I would like each of you to read at least 3- 4 story books (1 book per week; of at least 200 pages each) and to speak proper English as much as you can during the holidays.

We will begin anew in Term 3. So please rest well now and then prepare for Term 3 a few days before the holiday ends by packing your school bag early and checking the class blog for updates.

For those who HAVE NOT handed-in Compo 4, your compo file (with corrections done) and Unit 6 Spelling Worksheet (corrections and parent signature), please hand it in first thing Monday in Term 3.

EL Matters - 24 June

Dear 5F,

We are about to start on Term 3 soon.

I hope everyone of you has enjoyed your break and are getting yourself ready for the start of school.

Do take note that the school is undergoing renovation works now. So don't be too surprised to see construction equipment around the school and areas that have been cordoned off. Always walk around with your eyes opened and stay clear of areas that are cordoned off for your own safety.

I am looking forward to seeing you again.

I hope you are also looking forward to seeing your classmates and teachers again and getting back to the routine of lessons and learning.

Some administrative matters to note:

For those who HAVE NOT handed-in Compo 4, your compo file (with corrections done) and Unit 6 Spelling Worksheet (corrections and parent signature), please hand it in first thing Monday in Term 3.

EL Matters - 27 June

Dear 5F,

Welcome back to school!

It was interesting listening to the things that you did during the holidays. I hope that you had a good break and are ready for school.

Half of the year has past and we will now move a bit faster for Semester 2.
This is because I would like to cover more revision in class to prepare you for P6.

As such, I am going to be more strict on your homework deadlines.

From now on, I will only give pupils with a valid reason (CCA competition in the afternoons, illness and too much tuition homework for that day) a day's grace to hand-in the homework. After that day's grace, any pupil with homework pending will stay behind the next day to complete their work in school. You will need to inform your parents that you will need to stay back in school to finish your homework. If you have CCA after school that day, you will use part of your recess and lunch time to complete your work.

I really hope that all of you will be more diligent in doing your homework on time and doing it properly.

Some matters to note:

- Do Unit 6 Spelling Worksheet corrections and ask parents to sign (latest by Tue).
- Find Term 1 and Term 2 spelling list. Revise the spelling words. I will randomly test any of the words and their meanings with any spelling of the new units this term.
-Bring full scap paper tomorrow.

Hope you had a good Monday! See you tomorrow!

EL Matters - Share Share, Learn Learn, Win Win - Round 1 (1 July)

Dear 5F,

As mentioned in class, we are going to start on a new online activity today.

It will go on for every Friday to Sunday (latest 9 pm). I will share the results the following Monday/ Tuesday.

Let's call this online activity: Share Share, Learn Learn, Win Win [SLW2]

How it works:

Every Friday, I will post a set of questions. The topic for this weekend will be Phrasal Verbs - words we have learnt.

The aim is for everyone to provide their answers (as a comment). [SHARE SHARE]
We can also comment on any incorrect answer. Be nice and tactful. Don't insult anyone please.

By reading each other's answers, we will learn from one another. [LEARN LEARN]

On Monday, I will disclose the correct answers to the class.

I'm hoping that through this activity, we will kill 3 birds with 1 stone: [WIN WIN]

1) Revise the topic
2) Learn from one another
3) Have fun together

If at least 35 pupils in the class respond to the questions in the blog (from Friday - Sunday),
the class will get to play English games for 1 whole period the following Tue or Thur.

Sounds fun? Are you ready for SLW2?

Let's begin:
Fill in the blanks using the words in the box below. You can only use each word once.
Number your answers clearly. Be sure to write your name first.
E.g. Claire (1) xxx, (2) yyy, (3) zzz etc...
along      around      away      back      into      on      out      over      through      up

1. His heart attack was brought  by too much stress at work.

2. I didn't know his dog had died. I'm so embarrassed - I wish I hadn't brought  his dog at the party yesterday.

3. Your new dress really brings  the color of your eyes.

4. Don't you bring those dirty shoes  my clean house!

5. What exactly did you bring  from the experience. Did you learn anything at all?

6. They brought a pizza and some beer  and we watched an old movie on television.

7. You are only allowed to bring two bottles of wine  customs when you enter this country.

8. When we go camping, don't forget to bring  the binoculars so we can look for wildlife.

EL Matters and Phrasal Verbs Test Results - 14 July

Dear 5F,

We had our open-book phrasal verbs test yesterday.

I'm sad to say that we have 13 pupils who failed the test.

These 13 pupils will have to sit for the retest next Mon during recess. If they still fail after that, they will have to stay back during recess from Tuesday to Friday to study for Phrasal Verbs.

I would need parents of these pupils to ensure that they revise for all their class tests.
These class tests are important because they are bite-sized tests that help your child to be prepared for the main exams, (Tip: Study from the previous phrasal verbs test papers, including the most recent open-book test)

They will bring home their test paper today for parents to monitor and sign. I would like to see all test papers signed by tomorrow.

Homework:

- LRD Page 14 Part 1 and 2 (By Tmr)
- Study for Spelling test on Semester 1's words (Tmr)
- Study for Phrasal Verbs test on List 4 (Next Wed)
- 20 pupils have not completed CW5 - A Conflict
Tomorrow is the last day to hand-in. Otherwise, pupils will have to stay back after school to
  complete it.

To all parents and pupils who have been reading the class blog on a regular basis, I would like to thank you for your effort in monitoring your child's work and progress. I believe your child benefits greatly from this knowing that you are updated with class matters and homework.

May we learn from the ordeals of that day and becoming stronger and more understanding people.

Pupils also went home with a "Lady of the night" orchid and were briefed on how to take care of the orchids that blooms well and in large numbers.

Yesterday was the first day of the course. He gave everyone in the class a syllabus describing the homework and the exams. I couldn't believe how much he expects us to do. Several of the students immediately got (3)  and left the room. After they were gone, Professor Schmitt started asking the remaining students philosophical questions. They all had great answers, but then he got (4)  me. "What is art?" he asked me. I tried to answer him, but I couldn't get what I wanted to say (5)  to him. He smiled at me and got three or four art books (6) . He passed the art books around and asked us to discuss the question in groups. The people in my discussion group were really great; we all really enjoyed debating the question. Since we got (7)  so well, we have decided to form a study group, so we can help each other get (8)  this class.
I know my grades haven't been the best, but with the help of this study group I should be able to get it (9)  and do better this semester. Well, I need to get (10)   work and finish my assignments for tomorrow. Everybody take care, and I'll see you at Thanksgiving.

EL Matters - 18 July

Dear 5F,

Hope you had a good weekend break.

We are now into week 4 of Term 3. I hope everyone has already adjusted well to the pace of Term 3.

Thank you to the 15 pupils who have managed to post their answers to SLW2 Round 3 on the class blog. I understand that about 12 pupils are experiencing technical difficulties regarding posting comments on the blog. My school's IT technician has confirmed that you would need to set-up a Google account before posting a comment on the blog. If your existing Google account does not work for this, could you please set-up a new account to try again? Thank you for trying your best.

Homework:

- Sign Spelling Book and do corrections (By Tue)
(We have 9 failures. Parents, I would need your help to ensure that your child studies for all their spelling tests and is prepared for them. Thank you.)

- Practice Reading Aloud and SBC in LC Book for Practice 4 and 5 (By Week 6)

- Unit 7 Spelling will be next Friday (29 July). I'm still waiting for 11 pupils to hand-in today's homework so that I can go through the answers tomorrow and return the spelling list back to everyone for you to study.

Reminders:

- Study for Phrasal Verbs test 4 (this Wed)
- EL Remedial will begin this Friday (1.45pm-3.15pm)

Thank you.
